A New President; a New Beginning

For four years I doubted that my country existed. Trump’s illegitimate presidency continued to harm and embarrass our nation by destroying the principles and ideals of our founding fathers every day. Democracy was disappearing and fascism was the policy in the White House.

My hope for America was renewed in 2017 when I began to look forward to the 2020 election. After the 2016 election I hoped that the Republicans in Washington would place our nation first and oppose the vile policies of the mentally deficient bully claiming to be our president.

Instead, led by Moscow Mitch McConnell, and Lyin Paul Ryan, they became hypocrites, ignoring the American people, and bowed to the orange buffoon’s every demand.

Two days ago a real Americans took back their nation. The largest voter turnout in history gave Joe Biden 74 million votes and that number continues to grow. Sadly, the people don’t count in a presidential election. States elect our leader every four years: it’s called the “Electoral College.” It appears that Biden will win 306 electoral votes.

I titled this blog “My America; A Look Thru the Rearview Mirror,” for a reason. I am 74 years old. I have watched the actions of 12 presidents, and president elect Biden will be my 13th. Only one of his predecessors can be labeled as “great:” Barrack Obama. He not only saved our nation from financial ruin, he restored intelligence, dignity, and grace to the office. The eleven others can be placed in categories including ‘bad,’ ‘ineffective,’ ‘adequate,’ and one as ‘good.’

The reason I point this out relates to my hopes as an old man who loves his country, and would like to see it become a great country before I’m no longer here. I would like to see an end to racism. I would like to see ‘freedom and justice for all.’ My dream is to see the end of income inequality. The American worker has been virtually ignored for the last 40 years. Every man and woman should have an opportunity to secure the ‘American dream.’ I want to see every citizen have free healthcare and free higher education. It is ludicrous that only the wealthy have access to issues which should be available to everyone. As the richest nation in the world, with only 4.5 percent of the world’s population, it is absurd the five-percent of our nation’s people control 90 percent of the wealth.

In 2016, I had another dream; to see a woman become the President of the United States. After Trump’s illegitimate victory in the Electoral College, I began to support Kamala Harris. She fit most of what my dream candidate might be: a black woman, closer the the average age of all Americans, a member of the LGBTQ community, and either an atheist or a Muslim. That is about as American as anyone could be in the 21st century.

As an older American I have watched 11 of 12 older, white men place profits before people, and war over quality of life. The only reason I did not support Joe Biden initially is that one fact; he is an old, white man. With an average age of 38.1 years of age, I felt he was out of touch with the majority of our nation’s people. In most cases, he has proven me wrong. He is compassionate, and he claims that he will represent all Americans, and I believe he is honest.

When he chose Kamala Harris as his running mate, I was ecstatic. Her belief in progressive ideology will help our nation move forward into the future.

If my final dream comes true, the next 16 years will see a Democrat in the White House: eight years for Biden, and eight years for Harris.
