Atlanta Three-Year-Old with Leukemia Feels the Love

In February, Zooey Thomas of Atlanta was diagnosed with Leukemia. The three-year-old has been undergoing treatments for cancer ever since.

She is susceptible to infection, and the highly contagious  Covid-19 virus became a looming danger to her very existence. Naturally she was prevented from “trick or treating,” and her parents were forced to keep their door closed on Halloween evening.

They placed a sign in their lawn near the street apologizing for not being able to give candy to the children, explaining that their daughter had cancer. The families “ring camera” recorded children walking by their home. Each child who read the sign took pieces of candy from they bag and placed them in front of the sign. A few dumped their entire bags onto the lawn. This is my America. Many of the children were unaccompanied by parents; the decision was their own.

I stopped writing my previous blog, “Ask Reverend Jim,” last week. I was exhausted from writing negative stories about Trump and his administration for the last five years. I won’t end my criticism of men and women who have their own distorted vision of what our country should be. However, I will look for stories like this one, which is representative of the country which nourished me for 74 years.
