The Shame of being a Republican in the 21st Century

40 years ago an ambitious president decided to alter the direction of the once Grand Old Party. He witnessed an opportunity to increase the power of the right-wing through the support of the wealthiest one percent of all Americans. Early in 1981 Ronald Reagan declared a war on the working class.

Reagan's agenda was focused on the destruction of trade unions which would reduce the power of American workers to receive fair treatment in all future negotiations with their employers. Over the last 40 years, the number of millionaires and billionaires have steadily increased, while the lifestyle of the working class has diminished. During Trump's illegitimate presidency, the number of billionaires in the United States rose from 563 to 614. In 2017 there were approximately 11 million, millionaires; in 2020 that number has risen to a whopping 18.6 million, millionaires. Thank you DOW Jones and to Trump for his tax cuts for the rich.

The illusion, created by credit card debt and other purchases guaranteed by exorbitant interest rates placed the average American in debt which could not be paid for decades; this includes the high cost of a college education and student loans.

This partially explains why Republicans are joined together in an act of pure fascism, attempting to overturn the will of the people and keep the worst president in history in power. Republicans have spit on the Constitution for the last four years and they must be stopped.

If you believe the campaign promises of right-wing candidates, you are choosing to be ignorant. They are the party of big business and the super-rich. They have not served the majority of Americas for the last 40 years. They are not “Republicans;” they are greedy capitalists.

British-American journalist Mehdi Hasan describes the Republican Party in name only this way as he warned Joe Biden against making bipartisan gestures to the party which has become the enemy of the American people.

We should not buy into this Joe Biden line that they will have an epiphany after he is gone,” Hasan said. “This is who they are. We call them the GOP. There is nothing grand. There is a new study out today out of Sweden that says there are more authoritarian or as authoritarian as the Hungarian Party government of Viktor Orban as the Turkish government.”

Washington Post Journalist, Jennifer Rubin, was less diplomatic.

This is the exact game plan of a group, who doesn’t have a message, doesn’t have a majority,” Rubin said. “They are part of a diminishing demographic. And so do what people who can’t win in a democracy do and that is they become authoritarian.  They begin to undermine democracy. That’s their only hope. That is what voter suppression is all about. That is what disinformation is about. That is what the attack on our institution is all about. Then you slowly, slowly increase power by simply running over the lines of democracy. And you intimidate, bully people. And this is how a nonrepresentative minority stays in power.”

A more accurate name for the party on the right would be “Hypocrites United.” After denouncing the con man currently squatting in the White House in 2016, they bowed to his every illegal and immoral demand in 2017. The are unworthy of your votes.
