Who is the Greatest Player in NBA History? It's not Anyone You are Thinking About

No player in history accomplished as much for his team as the man who played for the Boston Celtics for 13 seasons. During that time, he won 11 NBA championships; was the MVP five times; and was an All Star 12 times. He was the most selfless player in history, and the pinnacle of what it means to be a “team player.”

He played center for 13 seasons although he was only six feet ten inches tall; not the biggest man by far in the NBA. If his team needed points; he scored. If defense was required, he dominated his opponents consistently. If the Celtics needed a great passer, he rose to the occasions. And if rebounds would decide the game, it was his time to shine.

Bill Russell graduated from the University of San Francisco in 1956. He was the second overall pick in the NBA draft. His physical attributes were listed as six-feet-ten-inches tall, and 215 pounds. His position was center.

The Celtics did not win the championship in 1956, but they did in 1957. They won eight straight championships between 1959 and 1969. Russel had made them the expected winner in every season during his career. He won his last championship in his final year of 1969.

His NBA statistics: 14,522 points; 15.1 per game. Rebounds; 21,620; 22.5 per game. Assists; 4,100; 4.3 per game.

No other player in history can compare to his contributions.

In Russell's tenure basketball was a team game, and Russell made his team not only better, but the greatest in history. Bill Russell made the Celtics legendary, and his legacy continued until 2008. They won a total of 17 NBA championships over six decades.

If you are a young basketball player with great ambitions, you might ask your coach if you could wear the number “six.”
